A Fantastic Base for Exploring the broader Breede River Valley and Boland region
Thanks to our central location, many – especially international guests – spend a few days here to not just visit the immediate Rawsonville/Breedekloof area, but also the charming towns that surround us.
If you need any advice on directions or other places to visit, just ask – we’re happy to help you plan the perfect itinerary.
Here are a few surrounding towns worth checking out:
Ceres
Ceres, approximately a 35-minute drive over Michell’s Pass, lies in a fertile valley known as the “Eden of the Cape.” This town is famous for its fruit orchards – apples, pears, cherries, you name it – and you might recognise the name from the Ceres fruit juices found in stores.
In Ceres, you can visit farms for seasonal fruit picking, especially cherries in summer.
In winter, Ceres is one of the few places in the Western Cape that sees snow – locals flock to see the snow in nearby mountains or even enjoy occasional snow on the ground.
The drive to Ceres is worth it for the scenery alone.
Tulbagh
The town of Tulbagh is nestled in a bowl of mountains about a 40-45 minute scenic drive away. It is renowned for its history and wine.
The 1969 earthquake led to the restoration of Tulbagh’s Church Street, where 32 Cape Dutch heritage buildings form the largest concentration of National Monuments in South Africa. Walking down this street feels like stepping back in time.
Tulbagh also has several excellent wine estates (distinct from Breedekloof’s, offering a nice variation) and olive farms.
It’s a great day trip where you can enjoy wine tasting, have lunch at a country estate, and soak in the old-world charm.
Worcester
Only a 20-minute drive away, Worcester is the largest town in the Breede Valley and offers attractions like the Karoo Desert Botanical Garden (a beautiful garden showcasing arid and semi-arid flora) and the Kleinplasie Living Open-Air Museum (where you can learn about pioneer life in the Cape).
Worcester is also home to the KWV Brandy Distillery and several wine cellars in the Nuy Valley nearby, so there’s plenty for food and drink enthusiasts.
Stroll around town to see its historic Cape Dutch architecture, do some shopping, or play a round of golf at the local golf club
